What Is Coreless Incense? How to Choose and Burn It

Coreless incense is a stick made without a bamboo center. The aromatic material forms the whole stick, so the format and the blend both shape the experience. If you are comparing incense styles or trying a new scent, the questions below will help you choose and use coreless sticks with care.

What does “coreless” mean?

A conventional bamboo-core stick has a thin bamboo support under the incense coating. A coreless stick has no such support: the plant-based mixture is formed into a self-supporting stick. Coreless does not, by itself, tell you which woods, herbs, resins or binders are in the blend. Read the ingredients for the particular scent.

How KOHALUME makes its coreless incense

KOHALUME forms its sticks from plant materials with a bark-based binder. The fragrance comes from the listed raw ingredients; we do not add fragrance oil or a charcoal base. The materials differ by scent, so a sandalwood-forward stick will not smell the same as an agarwood or herbal blend. Explore the individual product page for each blend’s listed ingredients and format.

How to choose a scent

Start with the kind of aroma you enjoy. A wood-forward blend may suit someone who likes a grounded, warm scent. A blend with herbs or flowers will have a different character. Scent descriptions are a guide, not a promise that everyone will perceive the aroma in the same way. If you are undecided, the KOHALUME Incense Discovery Set lets you choose four different scents from ten options. Each choice includes three coreless sticks, for twelve sticks in total.

How to light a coreless incense stick

  1. Place the stick securely in a heat-resistant holder on a stable, nonflammable surface.
  2. Light one end, let it catch briefly, then gently extinguish the flame so the tip smolders.
  3. Burn in a well-ventilated area, away from curtains, paper and other flammable materials.
  4. Let ash and the holder cool completely before handling or disposing of them.

Never leave burning incense unattended. Keep it away from children and pets. If you or anyone nearby is sensitive to smoke, avoid burning incense around them.

Common questions

Does coreless mean smokeless?

No. Burning incense produces smoke. The amount and character can vary with the blend, airflow and room conditions.

Does every stick use the same ingredients?

No. KOHALUME scents use different listed raw materials. Check the specific product page before ordering, especially if you are avoiding an ingredient.
